ISO 13179-1 and ASTM F1160 Coatings*
To test the shear strength of implant coatings, ISO 13179-1: 2014 specifies dynamic tests which cite the corresponding method from ASTM F1160-14. The coating is applied on the face of two cylinders, which are glued together before testing.
The opposite bonded layers are aligned vertically with their contact surface in the axis of action of the testing machine to ensure a pure shear stress without bending. For decoupling of constraining forces, the sample holders are attached on double Cardan joints.
The ISO standard requires 10 million load cycles for a successful test.
